After starting his professional career at Vejle Boldklub, Ankergren moved to Brøndby IF, one of Denmark’s most prestigious clubs, where he played a pivotal role in their domestic success from 2001 to 2004. His performances with Brøndby helped him gain recognition and ultimately led him to pursue opportunities abroad.

In 2004, Ankergren made a notable move to England, signing with Burnley FC, where he spent two years. Although he had to compete with other talented goalkeepers like Brian Jensen, his time at Burnley laid the foundation for his subsequent success in the English leagues.
